"Engaging with our community through the Strategic Planning process has allowed our school district to accomplish a great deal over the past six years. Continued accomplishment of our collective objectives remains our focus... as we seek to become northwest Michigan's finest center of teaching and learning."

- R.A. Hansen
Superintendent of Schools

The development of alternative and innovative programs is also a hallmark of the East Jordan Strategic Plan. Evidence of this commitment is abundant in the school district and observers need look no further than the community's passage of a major bond issue to measure the level of support. Funding from the bond provided the resources to build northwest Michigan's only center for advanced learning, the East Jordan Math, Science and Technology Center. Housed at East Jordan High School, the center provides an integrated, advanced program in math, science and technology that is dedicated to developing high-performing students. A similar program at the school district's elementary school - the "EXSL" program (Excellence for Special Learners) - provides challenging coursework during each school day for the school's most able learners.

In addition to the Math, Science and Technology Center, bond funds also provided the funding for the new East Jordan Middle School, a technologically advanced school that opened in September 1997. Bond funds also contributed a portion of the funding for the district's $1,500,000+ instructional technology plan, a plan that has provided a computer for every 3 students in the district, and a plan that has firmly established the East Jordan Schools as one of the state's leaders in instructional technology capability.

The East Jordan Schools are committed to positive educational change, and know that such a commitment is absolutely essential if today's students are to meet the challenges of tomorrow. As a result, and in spite of all of the successful programs that have been implemented, much remains to be done if the school district is to continue to establish a reputation of educational excellence. Doing so will require that the school district, in partnership with families and community, continue to maintain, develop and implement programs that will enable individuals to develop the academic and social skills, strength of character and creativity necessary to become successful family members, citizens and workers.
